The Story.
In 2019, Lance’s racing career of 12+ years was temporarily cut short, after a collision in a high school lacrosse game left him paralyzed from the chest down. Lance was permanently left with 15% function of his entire body; essentially having the ability to use his biceps, shoulders, and neck. Uncertain of what his future looked liked, racing was forced to be put on hold.
Lance focused his efforts on physical and occupational therapy, in addition to continuing his academic career at NC State pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering; while navigating the world from a wheelchair. While his body is paralyzed, his mind is lively and eager to prove what he is capable of. His success on the track is undeniable, yet it's his character and values beyond the racing circuit that truly set him apart. His injury marked a significant turning point in his life, but rather than dwell on its limitations, he chooses to highlight the positive impact it has had on his mindset and overall persona.
At the start of 2024, Lance was prepared and determined to dive back into racing. After 5 years of strength training and stabilizing his health, he hit the track with uncertainty and a chip on his shoulder. Within hours of being back on the track, Lance adapted to the car’s hand controls that he has to use due to his lack of foot and hand function. Not only would he be capable of driving again, but he had proven to himself and others that he would be on the podium again soon.
Fast forward to October 3rd of 2024, when Lance competed in his first race post-injury. After 8 months of testing, all of the hard work paid off. Lance swept the BMWCCA GP class winning 4/4 races and finishing consistently within the top 10/65 cars overall. Lance was also awarded with the Spirit of Club Racing Flag: a symbol of perseverance, moral, and character.
Moving forward, Lance intends on competing in an array of NASA races throughout 2025, with a hopeful transition to Porsche Sprint at VIR in July. By 2027, Lance plans to compete in GTD Pro, in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship. His ultimate goal is to prove to the world that regardless of a disability, he and so many others have the ability to overcome, compete, and succeed.
